Keep the mattress flat or on its long edge, cover it with a protective bag, carry it with at least two people, and never fold it tightly or leave it in a hot, closed vehicle. Then give it a few days to settle in the new bedroom before judging how it feels. Most moving damage to foam mattresses comes from those few things, and nearly all of it is avoidable with some planning before the truck arrives.
A king is the hardest bed in the house to move, mostly because of its width, not its weight. At 72 inches across (6 feet) and up to 78 inches long, it does not forgive tight stairwells or sharp hallway turns. Here is how to plan around that, with some numbers you can check against your own home.
Walk the path the mattress will take, from the bedroom door to the vehicle, and measure every narrow point: door widths, stair widths, landings, and lift dimensions if you live in an apartment block. A king comes in three common sizes, 72 x 72, 75 x 72, and 78 x 72 inches, and our king size mattress lists which one you own. Check the label or the original order if you are unsure.
A foam mattress is flexible, but not unlimited. If the tightest point on your route is narrower than half the mattress's long side, plan to turn it on its edge rather than trying to force it through flat.

People tend to overestimate the weight and underestimate the awkwardness. You can estimate the foam weight yourself with a simple formula.
Foam weight (kg) = length x width x thickness (in cubic metres) x foam density (kg per cubic metre)
Using a density range of 32 to 50 kg per cubic metre, which covers common high resilience and memory foam layers, the estimates look like this:
| Thickness | 72 x 72 inches | 78 x 72 inches |
|---|---|---|
| 4 inch | 11 to 17 kg | 12 to 18 kg |
| 6 inch | 16 to 26 kg | 18 to 28 kg |
| 8 inch | 22 to 34 kg | 24 to 37 kg |
These are estimates for the foam alone, not the cover, and your actual mattress will sit somewhere inside the range depending on how its layers are built. The takeaway is that even an 8 inch king is a load two adults can lift. The trouble is a six foot wide surface with no handles, which is why two people at minimum make sense, and three on stairs.
Use a mattress bag that fully covers the surface and edges, and tape the seams shut. Dust, rain, and the dirt on a moving truck floor are the usual enemies, and the bag handles all three. The bag is for the journey only. Plastic traps moisture, so take it off as soon as the mattress is in the new room, especially in humid months. Our guide on monsoon mattress care explains why trapped moisture matters.
Heat is the other risk. Memory foam softens as it warms, and a closed truck parked in the sun can get far hotter than the outside air. Load the mattress last if you can, keep it out of direct sun, and do not stack heavy boxes on it. Do not roll it or strap it into a tight fold either. Foam mattresses are not built to be creased, and a hard crease can leave a permanent line. A gentle, brief bend to get around a corner is one thing, and a fold held in place for a six hour drive is another.
Before the movers arrive, take clear photos of the mattress surface and edges, and keep your invoice somewhere you can find it. If the mattress is damaged later, you will know what condition it was in. Warranty terms generally treat handling damage differently from manufacturing defects, so read the coverage and exclusions on the Neobest warranty page before the move rather than after.
One buyer on MouthShut described the mattress as taking a few days to settle and reach its final shape, noticing it gradually expand and stabilise before the surface became more even. That is worth remembering after a move, particularly if the mattress spent hours bent, bagged, or tilted. A slightly different feel on night one does not automatically mean damage. Sleep on it normally for a week, then check the surface. If you see a lasting dip, a crease, or damage to the edges, take photos and contact the manufacturer.
Moving is the one time your bedroom changes. Use this formula to see whether your king fits comfortably.
Minimum room width = mattress width + (2 x walking space on each side)
With a 72 inch wide king and 24 to 30 inches of walking space on each side, the room should be at least 120 to 132 inches wide, which is 10 to 11 feet. Check the length as well, since a 78 inch mattress needs room at the foot. If your new bed frame has different inner dimensions from the old one, the mattress must fit those. Our breakdown of bed size versus mattress size covers how to measure the inner rails and how much clearance to leave.
A move is a good moment to question whether the mattress is worth hauling. If it sags, if you have been waking up stiff, or if it is well past the age where you would expect it to hold up, you would be paying to move a problem. Lay a straight edge across the sleeping area and measure the gap at the deepest point. A dip of more than about 2.5 cm (1 inch) is a commonly used rule of thumb for a mattress worth replacing. If yours passes, take it with you. If not, our guide on how to choose a mattress lists what to check, and you can explore different mattress options once you know what you want.
Set up the frame first, then bring the mattress in, and remove the bag as soon as it is in the room. Put it on a ventilated base, not directly on a damp floor. A mattress protector from our accessories collection keeps the surface clean from the first night. If the bed is not ready on day one, sleeping temporarily on the floor on a portable surface is better than leaving a bagged mattress on the ground, and our travel bed buying guide covers the options.
Neobest has manufactured polyurethane foam products since 2010. Our founder, Mr. Ramu Boya, is a chemical engineer, so we know how foam behaves under heat, compression, and bending, and that is where the advice above comes from. You can read more about our background on the about us page.
Can you fold a king size mattress to move it?
Not in the way you would fold a blanket. Foam mattresses are not designed to be creased, and a tight fold held for hours can leave a permanent line. If you must get around a tight corner, keep the bend gentle and brief, and check what the manufacturer recommends first.
Should I wrap my mattress when moving?
Yes, for the journey. A full cover protects it from dust, rain, and dirt. Take it off once the mattress is in the new room, because plastic traps moisture.
How long does a mattress take to settle after a move?
A few days is common. One MouthShut reviewer described a few days of gradual expansion before the surface felt even. If you see a lasting dip or crease after a week, photograph it and contact the manufacturer.
Can a king mattress be moved on its side?
Yes. Carrying it on its long edge is often the easiest way through doors and around corners. Avoid leaving it on its side for a long time or stacking weight against it.
Is it better to move my old mattress or buy a new one?
If it has a visible dip of more than about 2.5 cm, or you have been waking up stiff, replacing it may make more sense than paying to move it. If it is in good shape, moving it is usually the cheaper choice.
