How long does it take for a mattress to stop off-gassing?

Most polyurethane foam mattresses stop smelling noticeably within a few days to two weeks after unpacking. Memory foam tends to sit at the longer end of that range, and a faint trace can hang around for up to a month in a closed room. Airing the mattress in a ventilated space speeds it up.

That’s the short version. The longer one depends on the foam, the room and the weather. The first week with a new bed is when most people start wondering if something is wrong. Usually nothing is.

Neobest was founded in 2010 by Mr. Ramu Boya, a chemical engineer, and our range is built around polyurethane foam: memory foam and dual foam. So the question of why foam smells, and when it stops, is one we know from the material side.

What is off-gassing, and why does a new mattress smell?

Polyurethane foam is made by reacting chemicals called polyols and isocyanates, with additives that control softness, density and how the foam rises. After the foam cures, small amounts of leftover compounds escape slowly into the air. Adhesives and fabric treatments add a little too. These are volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, and their release is what people call off-gassing. It’s the same thing behind a new car smell or a freshly painted wall.

Most people describe the smell as sharp and slightly plasticky. It’s strongest in the first day or two, because the foam has been sealed in its wrapping and everything comes out at once when you open it.

How long does off-gassing last?

For most people, a few days to two weeks. The first two days are the worst. By the end of the first week, the smell has usually dropped to something you only catch with your face close to the surface. Around the two-week mark it’s gone from the room. Some people with sensitive noses still pick up a faint trace for up to four weeks, mostly on warm nights, when body heat brings it out.

What changes the timeline?

Foam thickness is the biggest factor. More foam means more material to release from, so a thick memory foam layer takes longer to clear than a thinner, firmer dual foam build.

Ventilation comes next. A mattress in a shut, air-conditioned room clears slower than one with a cross-draft. Temperature and humidity matter too. Warm, moving air helps. Damp monsoon air slows things down and can add a musty smell of its own, which is a different problem (more on that in the FAQ).

Packing time plays a smaller part. A mattress that spent a long stretch sealed in plastic tends to smell stronger when it’s first opened.

How can you make the smell go away faster?

  1. Unwrap the mattress as soon as it arrives. Use the biggest, airiest room you have and take off all the plastic.
  2. Leave it flat with windows open on two sides if possible, so air moves across the surface. A fan pointed at it helps.
  3. Keep it out of direct sun. Shade and moving air do the job, and strong sun can dry out foam and fade fabric.
  4. If the smell is strong, wait a day or two before sleeping on it. Plenty of people sleep on theirs from night one with no trouble, so it’s a comfort call.
  5. Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda, leave it a few hours, then vacuum it off. It absorbs odor without adding a scent of its own.
  6. Once you start sleeping on it, put a mattress protector on. It won’t stop the mattress from off-gassing, but it reduces how much reaches your face.

Is mattress off-gassing harmful?

For most healthy adults, the smell is a temporary annoyance that fades with fresh air. Some people react more. If you’re sensitive to smells, have asthma or another breathing condition, or you’re setting up a bed for a child, let the mattress air out in another room before anyone sleeps on it. If you get headaches or sore eyes or throat, talk to your doctor. We’re not doctors, and this isn’t medical advice.

What to expect from Neobest mattresses

We won’t tell you foam has no smell. A new polyurethane mattress will have some. Here is how our range tends to behave.

The Neobest Orthopaedic Memory Foam Mattress pairs firm support with a memory foam comfort layer, and the memory foam is the part that takes longest to air out. The Premium Memory Foam Mattress is our plush option, so as with any memory foam bed, plan for the longer end of the range. The Neo Ortho Dual Foam Mattress is reversible, with a soft side and a firm side. Dual foam builds usually air out a little quicker, though both sides will smell some on day one. The memory foam topper and pillows follow the same pattern, and the same airing steps work for them.

When should you contact the manufacturer?

If the smell is still strong after about four weeks of airing, get in touch. Do the same if it isn’t the usual chemical scent at all. A musty or sour smell points to moisture, not off-gassing. Check the room’s humidity and let the base and mattress breathe. If it persists, write to us at Customersupport@neobest.in or use our enquiry form with a short description and your order details.

FAQs

Can I sleep on a new mattress right away?

Yes, if the smell doesn’t bother you. If it’s strong, give it a day or two of airing first.

Does a strong smell mean the mattress is poor quality?

No. Day-one smell says little about how well a mattress is made. Polyurethane foam smells at first regardless of price.

Does a mattress protector stop off-gassing?

No. It acts as a barrier between the mattress surface and your face, but the foam keeps releasing underneath.

Can the smell come back after it fades?

A faint scent can return on warm nights during the first few weeks. It fades again.

How do I tell off-gassing from a damp smell?

Off-gassing smells chemical and gets weaker every day. A damp smell is musty or sour and doesn’t improve with airing.
